SCCC 127: Aging – An Introduction

This course is all about aging. It is an introduction for those who are just beginning to work with seniors and a refresher for those who have experience working in aging services. It is a primer on many topics that will help the learner understand the aging process. It also explores some of the myths and misperceptions of aging.

The following videos will give an overview of the biology and psychology of aging. They include information about common quality-of-life issues affecting seniors, such as financial security and mental health. The information includes tips about helping the seniors you serve and resources that are available. The videos also include information about ageism that will help you avoid making assumptions about the seniors you serve.
 
Our faculty member for this course is Maribeth Bersani. Maribeth has been active in the field of aging for over 40 years. She has held positions in government agencies that developed significant programs and services for seniors. She has also worked with senior living providers, advocating for policies and programs that treat all seniors with dignity and respect.
 
Maribeth holds a Bachelor’s degree from Alfred University and a Master’s degree in Gerontology from the University of Southern California. She has said “working with NFESH allows me to continue my love of helping seniors and tackle the genuine issue of hunger.”

SCCC SU-2: Vitamin D – Final Thoughts

Vitamin D may be the “sunshine” vitamin, but you don’t need to live in a sunny place to get enough of it. You can get Vitamin D from so many food sources! Now that you know how important it is, use the information in these lessons to make sure that you and the seniors you serve get enough Vitamin D to keep your bones strong and minds sharp.
