What is an Environment Rating Scale (ERS)?

ERS are used worldwide as a standardized tool to measure quality.  The scores can range from 1 (inadequate) to 7 (excellent quality).  Items are averaged to give an overall classroom score.  Since scores are always averaged there is no one thing that will prevent your classroom from scoring well. It is important to focus on the things that are in your control.

An ERS is not intended to teach best practice, they are tools for measuring quality.

Different scales are used based on the program or ages served.

In Kentucky, we are currently using…

Front cover of Infant Toddler Environment Rating Scale.

Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale – ITERS-R

Classrooms that have children ages infant – 3 years.

For this training we will be focusing on the ECERS-3.

Front cover of Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale.

Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale – ECERS-3

Classrooms that have children ages 3 years – enrolled in school.

Front cover of School-Age Care Environment Rating Scale.

School-Age Care Environment Rating Scale – SACERS-U

Classrooms that have school age children.

How are the ERS used in Kentucky?

Quality Coaches use ERSs to support best practices and guide programs in continuous quality improvement.

Raters use ERSs as an official tool to determine level of quality during rating visits.

Raters and Specialists must maintain reliability on the ERSs to ensure consistency across the state.

Navigation Pane

Screenshot of Canvas navigation page.

Within Canvas there are limited options to editing your font type.

Canvas allows you to change the font size manually. Or you can change font style between paragraph, preformatted, heading 4, heading 3, and heading 2. You are also able to manually bold, italicize, or underline text. As well as change the text color and background color.

While it can be beneficial if too many options are overwhelming, it can also limit the ability to make things “pretty.” You may need to play around with the different options to find what works well for you as a trainer and what would work well for your training.

There are other features that can be added within the content to add some depth and personality to the training, we will go over those in a bit more detail later in this training.

What’s Next

Have you attended face-to-face training yet?

YES? Great!

Finish up your Online Course for self assessment and grading for the final assignment.

NO? STOP!

Wait until after face-to-face day to get your course set up and work on your On Demand course.

If you are feeling super ambitious, you could always work on more course outlines or review Creating a New Course.

For this training you will not be required to submit a style guide, but as you go through the content and start creating your training keep in mind that you will want a way to make the training visually appealing to the learner, and there is limited ability to do so with different fonts or background colors.

Training Outcomes

  1. Create a course utilizing Canvas.
  2. Self-Assess course draft and get Training Coach Feedback.

Workplace Outcome

Publish first online course and list it in ECE-TRIS.

If at any point in this training you decide you would rather create a training using WordPress you are welcome to switch! Please reach out and we will get you added to the WordPress training.

Pre-Training Activities
